Modern technology results in an ongoing demand towards the application of high-performance steel and, beyond that, towards steel parts with a highest level of functionality. When it comes to forming technologies, hot sheet metal forming in this context actually constitutes one of the most promising and already successful approaches. The reason for this can be seen in the ability not only to improve formability at elevated temperatures, but, especially in the potential of simultaneous control of complex microstructures during this special type of thermo-mechanical processing.

It seems amazing that only slightly more than three decades after being invented in Northern Sweden, this technology has become the door opener for a broader industrial application of ultra-high strength steel. Indicators of this success story are the continuously increasing number of parts especially in car body structures which actually encourages a dramatic increase of production ca-pacity as well as an increasing number of technological solutions available.

The HNS conferences have become the world forum for the exchange of scientific and technical information on advanced ferrous alloys, which derive their properties from high interstitial nitrogen contents. New high nitrogen ferrous alloys offer exciting scientifc challenges and a wide variety of potential applications, which are explored by material scientists and engineers in the course of HNS 2004. The unusual combination of properties displayed by the High Nitrogen Steels presents the metals and materials community with new scientific questions, technical difficulties and only partially understood application performances.
In addition to an in-depth review of the High Nitrogen Steels, the conference included meetings focussing on other advanced interstitial ferrous alloys and their properties.
The conference specifically included no less than seven spotlight symposia:
- Atomic-scale Phenomena
- Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Phase Transformations
- Meso-scale Phenomena and Microstructures
- Alloy Development and Processing
- Applications and Performance
- Corrosion
- Welding
New subjects include the Nitrogen bearing Ferrous Shape Memory Alloys and the (High) Nitrogen Austenitic, Ferritic, Martensitic, Duplex and TRIP Steels. The combined Nitrogen- and Carbon Alloyed Steels are also been paid the necessary attention. In addition, the non-stainless Nitrogen-Alloyed Steels are considered.

This book contains all the papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Metal Forming, which was held in Kraków, Poland, on September 19-22, 2004. The series of Metal Forming Conferences organized since 1974 by Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza in Kraków, Poland, and since 1994 jointly with the University of Birmingham, UK, is intended to create a platform for contact between scientists, researchers and engineers working in the field of forming of metals. 30 years after the first meeting in Kraków, the Metal Forming Conference is well-recognized as a forum for the exchange of knowledge on the progress of research on various methods of the shaping of metals. The papers published in this book represent the state-of-the-art in the field of metal forming science and technology.
