1.1-Mt/a heavy section mill for Mechel, Russia
Jul 14, 2008
In July 2008 Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (Mechel OAO's subsidiary), awarded Danieli the contract for the supply of a new medium section mill and associated heat treating and on-line finishing facilities for production of 1,100,000-t/a of rails, beams and special profiles, on a turnkey basis, excluding erection, building and civil works.

The range of production will include more than 50% of the product mix dedicated to high-quality rails of up to 65-kg/m for railways and other applications (including special rails, vignoles, cranes, tram, etc.) supplied in up to 100-m lengths. The rest of the mix will be mostly concentrated on parallel-flange and other types of beams in up to 600-mm sizes, plus a minority portion of angles, channels and special sections.

The project foresees the installation of a new walking beam reheating furnace with a 240-t/h nominal capacity, for up to 300x360-mm blooms and up to 610x320x100-mm beam blanks. The hot rolling area will be based on the re-utilization of an existing Break Down stand (BD1), a new Break Down stand (BD2) and the new PSP intermediate and finishing sizing line that will be made up of a three-stand UFR pre-finishing reversing mill plus a single finishing-sizing stand.

After the finishing stand, a HiProfile gauge unit will enable in-line product size measurement and control, while the in-line rail hardening operation will be made possible thanks to a dedicated system, specifically designed by Danieli.

The PSP system will be based on SCC (Stand Core Concept) super-heavy duty universal rolling stands, featuring 1,200-mm-dia (in Universal version), all fitted with automatic fast changing of the rolls and guides package. Downstream of the cooling bed and the H/V straightener, dedicated facilities will be provided, respectively for beams/sections and for rail cold processing and finishing.

The "rail" line will feature press-straightening, NDT inspection, sawing/drilling, final inspection and collecting. The "beam" line will include cold sawing and a double-head automatic magnetic stacker, bundling and collecting.

All electricals and the advanced automation and process control system will be from Danieli Automation. The turnkey supply will also include all necessary auxiliary plants and systems. Hot startup of the new mill is scheduled for the Q4 2010.
