Salzgitter Flachstahl commissions slab caster

The fourth continuous slab caster for Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), Germany, has successfully commissioned by SMS Siemag, Germany.
The single-strand caster, in circular-arc design, produces slabs in widths ranging from 1,100 mm to 2,600 mm and in thicknesses of 250 mm and 350 mm. The slab dimension of 350 mm x 2,600 mm currently represents the largest section size for continuous casters in Central Europe.
The order scope comprised the basic and detail engineering, the supply of all mechanical components and the complete electrical and automation systems, including the technological control systems and process models. In addition, the supply scope included the solid structures and structural steelwork, a new water supply and treatment system as well as the erection, commissioning and supervision.
Salzgitter Flachstahl uses the caster for the production of highly demanding micro-alloyed steels, heavy-plate grades and sour gasresistant tube and pipe grades according to the API-5L and HIC standards. SZFG is increasing its steelworks capacity by means of the new continuous caster with slab thicknesses of 250 and 350 mm.
In particular the 350 mm thickness option makes it possible to provide slabs for heavy-plate production in a hitherto completely new range of dimensions that are most attractive for future requirements. The equipment of the caster includes several intelligent slab casting modules which determine quality and production.
