Corus Strip Products IJmuiden has awarded Siemens Nederland N.V.a contract for new drive technology for the existing hot strip mill no. 2.
In the course of the project, the main drives of the seven-stand finishing line at Corus IJmuiden will be fitted with new Simoreg DC-Master converters. Siemens is also responsible for engineering, installation and commissioning, and will take care of the integration into the existing plant. The new drive systems are intended to ensure the availability and productivity of the hot strip mill over the long term.
The short installation time available for the individual systems constitutes a particular challenge. All the installation and start-up work will take place during planned maintenance downtimes in the spring and autumn of each of the coming years. This will ensure that the drive modernization program does not cause any additional production outages.
Siemens has also been contracted to supply new controllers for bending and hydraulic adjustments for the roll stands of the finishing line and to integrate them into the existing Siroll automation environment. The modernization will take place in parallel with mechanical modification.
Corus Strip Products Ijmuiden belongs to the Strip Products Division of the Tata Corus Group. The integrated iron and steel works at IJmuiden in the Netherlands has a capacity of 6.9 million tonnes of liquid steel per year. This is used to produce hot-rolled, direct-rolled, pickled and oiled, cold-rolled electroplated and organic strip coated flat products.
The drive systems are scheduled to be installed on the main drives of the seven-stand finishing line by spring 2012. The order is valued at several million euros. In 2006 and 2007, the automation for the hot strip mill no. 2 has already been modernized by Siemens in several stages.
