ABB will supply electrical and automation equipment for a new downcoiler, a new exit coil conveyer line and inspection station for coils, as well as for a new roller table and laminar cooling section between the finishing mill and downcoilers. ABB’s delivery includes control systems based on System 800xA, as well as drive systems ACS800 including motors and MNS switchgear. The company is also responsible for engineering, commissioning and erection.
Both orders were won in a joint consortium with SMS Demag, Germany, who is delivering the mechanical machinery for the projects.
The hot-rolling mill in Borlänge was originally built in 1961 for a maximum production capacity of 500,000 tons per year. The plant has been modernized over the years, enabling annual production to be increased to the present 2.8 million tons. The new project is in line with SSAB’s strategy for the mill’s increased productivity and flexibility, and above all, being able to further develop and roll new qualities of high-strength steel.
The two orders have a combined value of over $18 million. The downcoiler to be delivered is a repeat order of the unit delivered and commissioned earlier this year. The exit coil conveyer line and inspection station will be delivered during the summer of 2010. The downcoiler will be put in service at the end of 2010 and the roller table/cooling section will be delivered during the summer of 2011.
