The first beam blanks produced on the combination caster for slabs and beam blanks in the works of Peiner Träger, Germany.

At Peiner Träger GmbH, a company of the Salzgitter Group, located at Peine in Germany, the first slabs have been successfully cast on an combination continuous caster, followed by the casting of beam blanks after the section-size change. The existing continuous caster for beam blanks was revamped and extended into a combination caster for the production of steel slabs or beam blanks, as required. The continuous caster No. 2 of Peiner Träger is therefore the first combination caster in Germany for the casting of beam blanks and slabs.

The two-strand combination caster is designed for the production of slabs with a thickness of 250 mm and widths from 500 to 1,100 mm. The combination caster also produces beam blank sizes with the dimensions 1,150 x 490 x 130 mm and 800 x 440 x 130 mm. This means that the world's widest beam blank size is produced on the beam blank caster.

The scope of supply comprised all strand guiding components required for the continuous slab caster, the slab mold as well as the electrical and automation package including the technological process models. Pinch roll units 3 and 4 (driven segments 8 and 9) are used for all casting shapes, i. e. for slabs and beam blanks, and need not be replaced when the section size is changed. In this way, changing times can be reduced and production increased. Segments for the beam blank caster have also been supplied. A design innovation is the ability to replace segments 3 to 5 by the equipment required for the blow-off device and the edge heater. In total 40 segments have been supplied.

Within the scope of the investment program, Peiner Träger has additionally placed an order for the supply of an electric steelmaking plant. Once this steelworks has been commissioned, scheduled for this year, the current annual capacity of some 1 million t of steel will be almost doubled while meeting the increased demands placed on the steel quality.

At the Peine location, the so-called Peiner Träger ("Peine Beams") which are renowned worldwide, are produced, as well as a great many sectional steel grades, such as European steel beams, sheet piling sections and special sections.
