Hundreds of tonnes of weathering steel is to be used in a giant treetop attraction that will be the first of its kind in the world when it opens in 2008. The treetop walkway at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in Richmond, London, is its most ambitious project in two decades. The innovative design, incorporates a walkway built 18 metres off the ground to give Kew´s almost 2 million annual visitors a spectacular birds-eye view of the world-famous site.
Corus´weathering steel plate was specially selected for the 200-metre walkway because of its strong, self-protecting, durable qualities that make it ideal for a range of outdoor structures in exposed locations. The fact that the steel is resistant to atmospheric corrosion eliminates the need for coatings - leaving a natural colour that blends nicely into Kew´s attractive surroundings.
The 400 tonnes of steel plate was manufactured at Corus´ Scunthorpe steelworks in Lincolnshire, and Dalzell and Clydebridge steelworks in Motherwell, Scotland.
