CMC Alabama, Birmingham, USA, commissioned the remote controlled ram for slag
door cleaning in their 80-t EAF. This measure aims at reducing the risk of
injuries of their workers.
The new equipment consists of a remote controlled truck equipped with a
horizontal arm eliminating the need for a man-driven forklift. It removes scrap
deposited in the slag door tunnel during bucket charging and pushes the scrap
into the furnace, away from the slag door thus preventing scrap from dropping
into the slag pit. The machine also restores the furnace breast after tapping
and regenerates its working level by removing excess slag deposits.
The Birmingham/USA-based steelmaker produces a wide range of standard and
high-strength steels. Their commitment to safety has gained CMC Steel Alabama
repeated recognition by the Steel Manufacturers Association as the safest steel
mini mill in North America.
