ThyssenKrupp CSA put in operation Blast Furnace No. 1 at Santa Cruz, RJ, Brazil

ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico have successfully put in operation the first of the two new blast furnaces which belong to the company’s new slab plant at Santa Cruz, close to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The blow-in of BF No. 1 took place in the evening hours of Tuesday, July 13th; the furnace is now ramping up production in accordance with the plant’s overall requirements.
At full capacity, the ironmaking plant will deliver 5.34m t/a of hot metal to the steelmaking shop. Both blast furnaces have a hearth diameter of 12m and 2 tapholes each.
The design, the supply and the site management for the entire blast furnace area have been carried out by the Paul Wurth Group. More particularly and among others, the company contributed to the project: the stockhouse and Bell Less Top charging systems, blast furnace cooling, re-cooling and water treatment plants, utilities systems, hot blast stoves, top gas cleaning, de-dusting and filtering systems, TMT tapping equipment, pulverized coal injection including coal grinding and drying, slag granulation with INBA dewatering and a 2-strands pig casting facility. Electric equipment, instrumentation and automation for all mentioned sub-plants and systems have been an integral part of the order to the plant builder.
Over the entire construction period, the company provided to ThyssenKrupp CSA project and site management services. Paul Wurth’s team is still present on site for the continuing hot commissioning of Blast Furnace No. 1, as well as for preparing the start up of the BF No. 2 line.
