-updated- Bulldozers are clearing a 3,500-acre forest beside the Tombigbee River in southwest Alabama, USA. It won't be a vast empty lot for long as construction begins next year on the $3.7 billion ThyssenKrupp steel mill.

Top executives from ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, LLC, ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA, LLC, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and more than 700 state and local officials attended groundbreaking for the massive project on November 2.

"We will be in Alabama for decades to come, providing good jobs for many generations," ThyssenKrupp AG Chairman Dr. Ekkehard D. Schulz said before a high school band struck up "Sweet Home Alabama."

Karl-Ulrich Koehler, Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel added, "This new processing facility will allow us to strengthen our position in North America. It will create major advantages in terms of quality, costs, and access to a customer base with a demand greater than current supply."

Steel production isn't new for Alabama. It remains a vital part of Birmingham's economy with U. S. Steel's plant in Fairfield. SeverCorr also has a new mill near Columbus, Miss. and IPSCO has a mill on U.S. 43, near the ThyssenKrupp site.

The facility will include a hot strip mill which will be used primarily to process slabs from ThyssenKrupp's new steel plant in Brazil. It will also feature cold rolling and hot-dip coating capacities for high-quality end products of flat carbon steel. The facility will have an annual capacity of 4.1 million metric tons of carbon steel end products. In addition, a stainless steel melt shop will be built with an annual capacity of up to one million metric tons of slabs, which will also be processed on the hot strip mill. A cold rolling facility is to be built, which will be designed initially to produce 350,000 tons of cold strip and 125,000 tons of pickled hot strip. In addition, the stainless steel plant will provide ThyssenKrupp Mexinox in San Luis Potosi (Mexico) with its required pre-material (340,000 metric tons of hot band).

The hot strip mill, which will serve the carbon steel and stainless steel operations, will have an annual maximum capacity of 5.4 million t/a. It will be the world�s highest capacity line of its kind for the production of high-grade, high-strength steel. The hot strip mill will process slabs from ThyssenKrupp�s new steel plant in Brazil and stainless slabs from ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA.

The cold rolling complex consists of a coupled pickling/tandem mill with a maximum capacity of 2.5 million t/a of cold strip, plus a continuous pickling line and a skin-passing mill.

"This contract award is a very significant step in the development of our Alabama facility," Bob Soulliere, President and CEO of ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, LLC, told STEEL GRIPS. "The hot strip mill and cold rolling complex are two of the most critical components for our operations."

ThyssenKrupp�s new plant complex, which will process carbon steel and stainless steel for highvalue applications, is scheduled to begin operations in 2010.
