China Steel orders fifth continuous caster
Feb 17, 2007
China Steel Corporation (CSC), Taiwan, has commissioned SMS Demag, Germany, as the leader of an international consortium, with the supply of a two-strand continuous slab caster. The facility will be erected at the Kaohsiung location and will be used to produce an annual 2.9 million t of steel slabs in the gages 230 and 250 mm. It will attain a maximum casting speed of 2.2 m/min.

The SMS Demag supply scope comprises the basic and detail engineering as well as the supply of all mechanical core components and the entire electrical and automation systems, including the technological control systems.

The spring-guided, hydraulically driven mold with resonance oscillation is equipped with remote adjustment for the narrow faces. This allows the casting width to be adjusted between 900 and 1,680 mm during operation.

The mold level control (MLC) is used for ensuring that the slabs have a high surface quality through the avoidance of casting-powder inclusions.

The temperature profile of the mold is recorded by the mold monitoring system (MMS) and utilized for controlling the secondary cooling by means of dynamic solidification control (DSC). Center segregations and porosities are reduced by Dynamic Soft Reduction in order to obtain slabs with consistently good internal quality.

The capacity of the new slab caster will enable CSC to make the fullest use of the steel melt shops installed upstream and thus meet the rising demand for flat products.

The complete automation is prepared and put into operation by using the proven Plug & Work method. Plug & Work simulates the production sequence and allows the automation functions to be tested and optimized under realistic conditions prior to installation in the works. This will also result in a much shorter commissioning, planned for December 2008.

China Steel operates Taiwan's largest integrated steel plant and produces around 10 million t of steel per year there. The fact that this facility already represents the fifth continuous caster supplied by SMS Demag to CSC underlines the good relations which we enjoy with our customer China Steel.
