High voltage power distribution package for SAIL´s Rourkela steel plant
Feb 15, 2009
The Industry Solutions Division of Siemens Ltd. India, Mumbai, has received an order from the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) to supply an extra high voltage power distribution package to the Rourkela Steel Plant for augmentation of their existing main Step Down Substations (MSDs) and installation of new MSDs.

The Steel Authority of India is planning to enhance the production capacity of its Rourkela Steel Plant, Orissa from 1.9 million tonnes to 4.5 million tonnes. This also requires the extension of the existing power supply. The power distribution package provided by Siemens will convert the power received from the grid at 220 kV level and feed it into the rolling mills and the oxygen plant.

The scope of work for this order includes design & engineering, supply, civil work, erection, testing and commissioning of 220 kV gas insulated switch gear (GIS), 132 kV GIS and AIS (air insulated) switchyards, 33 kV GIS,11 km 132kV transmission line and substation automation system for individual substations. Further, this project also encompasses the setting up of 132 kV Transmission Lines, interconnecting new and existing substations and strengthening the 32 kV ring networks in order to have a better power flexibility.

Commenting on bagging this order from SAIL, Mr. Robert Wagner, Executive Vice President, Industry Solutions, Siemens Ltd said, "This order for the Rourkela Steel Plant is an important step forward in the enduring partnership that SAIL shares with Siemens. All SAIL plants are now equipped with a range of Gas Insulated Switchgears from Siemens, and this is a true testimony of the confidence that SAIL has in Siemens´ ability to deliver to their expectations. This order further reaffirms the edge that our products and solutions have in the power distribution market."

The Rourkela Steel Plant is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2010. The order volume exceeds 30 million EUR.
