Viraj Profiles Limited, India, orders AOD converter
Jun 8, 2011
The stainless steel producer Viraj Profiles Ltd., placed an order for the supply of an AOD (argon-oxygen decarburization) converter for its plant located in Tarapur, Maharashtra, India. The new converter will enable the company to expand the stainless steel output required for its rolling mills.
Viraj Profiles Ltd. is India's largest producer of stainless steel long products. The company is currently implementing a large-scale program to expand its production capacities. As part of this program Siemens VAI already received an order to supply a rolling mill for stainless steel bar and light sections (180,000 metric tons per annum). The new AOD converter will have a capacity of 245,000 tons of liquid steel per year, which will enable Viraj Profiles Ltd. to substantially increase both the volume and efficiency of stainless steel billet and bloom production in Tarapur. It will then be able to supply most of the new and existing rolling mills with billets from its own production.
Siemens VAI will be responsible for the engineering of the AOD converter, which will have a tapping weight of 55 ton. It will also supply core components, including the trunnion ring, tilting drive, valve station, rotating inlet, injection nozzles, top lance and a combined lance and extraction hood carriage. The special features of the plant include the suspension system, a traversing extraction hood and top lance, as well as individual nozzle control. The order also includes the Level-2 automation system for the converter tilt drive, the blowing lance and the bottom blowing system. Siemens VAI will also supply the process automation.
Siemens Ltd. India will handle some of the local manufacturing for the project. This includes supplying the trunnion ring and parts of the basic automation system for the AOD converter as well as supervising installation and commissioning.
The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2011.
