Tata Steel, ground breaking ceremony of ‘I’ blast furnace
Just less than 6 months after commissioning the new blast furnace 'H' at their Jamshedpur plant, Tata Steel broke ground for the construction of the next modern ironmaking unit, on Nov. 03, 2008.
Tata Steel's is steady increasing the capacity of Jamshedpur Works to 10 Mt/a, which is a part of the company's brownfield expansion project. The 'I' Blast Furnace will be designed, supplied, erected and commissioned by the consortium consisting of Paul Wurth Italia, Larsen & Toubro and Paul Wurth India.
The blast furnace 'I' will have an inner volume of 3,814 m3. It largely repeats the plant configuration of blast furnace 'H' including proven solutions and state-of-the-art technology: The blast furnace proper with copper and cast iron stave coolers, and the new Gen2 two-hopper bell less top charging system. Two flat castfloors with four tapholes are fitted with TMT fully hydraulic casthouse machines. The high-performance hot blast stoves with internal combustion chamber are equipped with a heat recovery system, using the waste heat from the stoves’ exhaust for savings in fuel consumption. Energy in terms of electrical power is also recovered from the BF gas through a top gas pressure recovery turbine. Finally, the scope of Paul Wurth supplies also includes a pulverized coal injection system and two Inba slag granulation plants.
While addressing the gathering, Mr. B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel said, "It is indeed an achievement that we are at the ground breaking ceremony of the 'I' blast furnace. This is a project about productivity and a project aimed at making Jamshedpur, the best steel producing site. I would like to congratulate everybody who has worked towards making this function possible."
The furnace is expected to get commissioned by November 2010.
