Kerstin Garbracht:
Dedicated to forging: Ulrich Schmied
Jan 10, 2006
Nomen est omen, as ancient Romans used to say, and this especially is true for Ulrich Schmied, whose family name denotes blacksmith. Nice idea, but a popular fallacy. With this artist, it was just the other way round. He was so attracted by the occupational image of a blacksmith that he even adopted this name. Hitting his website, you will find his personal motto "Alle Menschen mssen sterben, nur die schwarzen Schmiede nicht. Denn sie sind aus Stahl und Eisen, und diese mag der Teufel nicht." This rhyme means: no man can escape death except the blacksmith, for he is of steel and iron which the devil loathes.
