Dillinger Hütte, Germany, to build new continuous casting line
May 27, 2011
A new double-strand continuous caster, to be known as Continuous Caster 6 (CC6), will be built at the steel plant in Dillingen. The line will supply slab to both high-capacity heavy plate rolling mills in Dillingen and to its wholly owned subsidiary, GTS Industries in Dunkirk. A vertical type caster, which has already proven its effectiveness in Dillingen, is to be employed. The new Continuous Caster 6 will replace Continuous Caster 3.
With this investment of around EUR 300 million Dillinger Hütte underscores its technological leadership in the production of continuously cast slabs for the most demanding heavy plate specifications.
Continuous Caster 6 will produce continuously cast slabs for the most demanding heavy plate specifications.
With the 1961 start-up of the world’s first continuous caster for heavy slab, producing dimensions up to 1,500 mm wide x 200 mm thick, Dillinger Hütte placed itself at the forefront of technological development. The company has since repeatedly confirmed its leading position, most recently in October 2010 when the CC5 continuous caster – with a capacity for thicknesses of 450 mm – enabled the company to once again produce the world’s thickest slabs.
Construction of the new facility is to begin in fall 2011. The start of operation is planned for the first half of 2014.
