The precipitation of AlN in hot strip is an important aspect in tailoring optimum manufacturing conditions for the production of cold strip via hot strip of unalloyed steels. Therefore, a model was established to calculate the precipitation during cooling of the coiled hot strip. The model comprises nucleation and particle growth and delivers the total volume of AlN precipitates as a result and thus the fraction of nitrogen bound in AlN. A comparison of calculated values with experimental results shows good agreement. By means of the model the impact of the main parameters, coiling temperature and ratio of nitrogen and aluminium, can be revealed. The results provide a basis for the design of the precipitation during cooling in the coil to achieve a de-sired precipitation state in the finished hot strip.
