Modelling of the mixed weld zone of dissimilar metal joints by functionally graded materials

Welding dissimilar metals with very different properties, such as aluminium and steel, is considered to be a very necessary field of research in the mechanical and aerospace area. To provide a better understanding of the mechanical properties of the mixed weld zone, a two-dimensional finite element modelling of dissimilar material joints directed toward the investigation of thermal residual stresses has been considered in this paper. The objective of this research work is manifold: first, to offer an understanding of the important material effects that should be used in the modelling of welding processes; second, to provide insight into how welding processes can be optimized, and third, to infer how a better weld can be performed. A finite element modelling, simulation using Abaqus and comparisons with available experimental findings are provided. Computations have also the advantage of enabling optimization in the input parameters, which in turn will help in obtaining quick and cost effective results.
