Trends in car body materials
By Bruno C. De Cooman
Steels for body-in-white design, strength demands by automotive industry, reactions of the steel industry, suitability of higher strength steels for sheet steel production, acceptance of new steel grades by carmakers
The present review discusses recent trends in car body material selection. A clear global evolution is emerging in the selection of materials for body-in-white applications: steel remains the material of choice, but carmakers are changing the focus of the properties requirements. Two main directions are being emphasized: materials functionality and the need for ultra high strength steel. Increased passive passenger safety and lightweight construction considerations require a large array of steel grades, with each grade optimized for the function of the part. The development of steel grades with strength levels of 1GPa or more will become one of the main areas of steel products research and innovation within the steel industry.
