Scalight, the concept for intelligent body-in-white architecture
By Michael Buescher and André Kröff
Space frame, lightweight, atlas, hydro forming, roll forming, steel
For building up a body-in-white architecture there are many different solutions in the car making industry. Such as modules, space frame or, mostly chosen, the standard shell structure. Costs, weight and timing are, right next to the technology, the major topics running a design and production project, building up a new body in white or complete vehicle.
Keeping a single focus on the body in white, the German companies Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in Osnabrück and the Salzgitter AG in Salzgitter are cooperating for an innovative engineering and development project. The aim of this project is to show the cost, weight and performance benefits you can get out of an intelligent use of design, structure, material and production combination. The result is a concept called Scalight, representing a future-oriented offer to the customers and OEM´s of the car building industry.
