Experience and results after three years of operation of a three-roll reducing and sizing block
tree-roll-technology, free-size rolling, operating costs, productivity, engineering steels
von Moos Stahl AG, Emmenbrücke, Swiss, the competence center for the manufacturing and processing of high-grade, special and free-cutting steel within the Schmolz + Bickenbach AG started operation of a 5-stand 3-roll reducing and sizing block in August 2002. In the combined wire rod and bar mill, this equipment is used as finishing block for round and hexagonal cross-sections as straight bar as well as bar-in-coil and thin wire. In addition, it provides all necessary pre-sections for the wire-rod finishing block.

The design and the flexible operation do not only offer the possibility of obtaining better product quality (e.g. tolerance, sur-face, mechanical properties), but allows rolling with one pass family in the roughing and intermediate mill free-size-rolling, re-mote adjustment of the stand and guides as well as quick stand change. The results are higher yield and productivity at re-duced operating costs.

Based on the experience and results obtained during the first three years of operation at von Moos Stahl AG, the advantages for the products as well as the whole production process are shown in terms of quality and market flexibility.
