Thermomechanical processing; wire rod products of big finished diameters; Garret coiler process; B-, MnB-, CrB-, Cr-, CrMo alloyed steels; high-alloyed cold heading steel 30MnMoCrB3; rolling technology for bar-in-coil production in daily production at Acciaierie Bertoli Safau (ABS) SpA controlled by an expert system and microstructure model
Thermomechanical processing still offers a high potential for product improvements resulting in benefits for the downstream industry. Especially with wire rod products of finished diameters > 10.0 mm of the classic B-, MnB-, CrB-, Cr-, CrMo alloyed steels it is possible to obtain desirable property combinations by combining normalising rolling with selectively retarded cooling. However, optimized thermomechanical processing also allows the production of bigger dimensions via the Garrett coiler process. Thus, the expected results can be achieved as this presentation shows on the example of the high-alloyed cold heading steel 30MnMoCrB3. An optimized rolling technology for bar-in-coil production was developed and first applied to daily production at Acciaierie Bertoli Safau (ABS) SpA. The advanced use of the new microstructure model and the implementation of metallurgical expert systems were key elements for the success in practical operation.
