Fault tolerant SVC arc compensation system for DC arc furnaces
EAF steel plant, DC-EAF, power generation, development and application of a means to overcome tripping of power systems; fault-tolerant SVC arc control system
A steel plant depending on local power generation and being connected to a grid feeding power to many DC arc furnaces, faces a great challenge during voltage dips and ground faults that cause tripping of power systems. Such trips do not only result in loss of production but also cause stresses on generation due to loads throw off. At Essar Steel, where generation is in excess of 700 MW and where four furnaces (3x 110 MW and 1x140 MW) are run, trips cause serious operational issues.
This paper describes a new SVC control system with fault ride through feature, developed by ABB Switzerland Ltd. based on conceptual requirement from Essar Steel Ltd.
Due to a fast data logger system recently installed at Essar Steel plant using an intelligent GPS based metering system, it was easy to record the sustainability and functionality of the new control system.
