Development tendencies for the press hardening of coated steel
Development tendencies for the press hardening of coated steel
This contribution introduces the actual tendencies for the application of coated steels under consideration of newly developed processing technologies. On the strength of restricted properties concerning elongation in the press hardened condition, state-of-the-art material 22MnB5 cannot be used for all body-in-white parts. Consequently, from the point of application, the target is to design the press hardening process for steel material in such a way that the part properties will be significantly improved especially as far as crash behaviour is concerned. Furthermore, the essential advantages of the press hardening process, such as the high slope accuracy and the extremely good deformation behaviour especially for geometrically complicated parts, should be used. Innovative technologies such as tailored tempering make it possible to establish local mechanical properties across the part. Tailored tempering is a thermomechanical process route comparable with the control of temperature during the production process for complex phase steel in the hot rolling mill. On this basis, a significant improvement of the rest elongation in the press hardened part is possible even with manganese boron steel 22MnB5. Being applied locally, this technology allows the reduction of subsequent joining operations. Additionally, the process chain of hot forming can positively be effected by applying innovative heating concepts, for instance inductive heating.
