Kerstin Garbracht: Latest trends for building up a competitive supply chain in future-oriented steelmaking
Strategic trends to meet future challenges, investment trends to successfully cope with international competition, value-added steel products, human resources
Excerpt from a presentation to 7th Chinese Iron and Steel Industry Chain Strategy Development and Investment Summit, Beijing, Nov. 18-21, 2009
What is it that makes steel industry competitive in our days? is the crucial question governing every consideration and decision of our top managers. The benchmark is not only set by the financial challenge, but also by environmental issues, product quality and value. This implies conscious use of resources and energy. The motivation to sustainably create steel products of high quality is the only way to meet such an overall challenge. Adequate tools supporting us to reach this aim cover, above all, up-to-date plant technology consuming less energy, state-of-the-art processes fulfilling the low carbon footprint requirement and superposed quality execution systems allowing for trouble-free production of custom-tailored steel.
Strategic trends together with technical investments are, without doubt, successful means to cope with international competition. Anyway, the human resource must not be forgotten, as sophisticated lines, machinery and equipment only perform as good as their supervising brain.
