Jubilee weekend for Europe's biggest blast furnace
This weekend, Schwelgern blast furnace No. 2 in Duisburg/Germany is going to produce its 70 millionth t of hot metal. This record will be obtained within the first furnace campaign which started in autumn 1993.
Europe´s biggest blast furnace with a hearth diameter of 14.9 m has been supplying the two BOF melt shops Bruckhausen and Beeckerwerth for 19 years with an average hot metal amount of around 12000 t/d.
Featuring 42 tuyères and 4 tapholes BF 2 has been processing almost 19000 t of iron ore and up to 4000 t of coke. It has also been delivering high-value by-products, such as, around 3300 t of blast furnace slag/day as a basis for cement manufacture, and around 12 million m³ top gas per day for use in the mill's energy network.
