Sep 28, 2010
Qatar Steel Company's steelworks in Mesaieed, Qatar, is to expand billet production capacity by up to 30 percent while at the same time reducing specific consumption values and waste gas emissions.
Siemens is supplying a 95 ton electric arc furnace, a 95 ton ladle furnace,
a five-strand continuous billet casting plant and the associated ancillary equipment for the steelworks in Mesaieed Industrial City, which is located about 50 kilometers south of Doha, the capital of Qatar. A new dedusting plant is also being installed in the works, which will considerably reduce emissions from steel production. The scope of supply is rounded off by a system for charging the electric arc furnace with DRI and an alloying facilities.
Qatar Steel Company is one of the leading steelmakers in the Gulf Region and has been operating a meltshop and rolling mill in Mesaieed Industrial City since 1974. Its capacity is being increased to meet the growing demand for structural steels in the Gulf Region. A rebar rolling mill at the same works has been in operation since 2009.
The order value is in the double-digit million Euro range. The modernized plant is scheduled to start production in the middle of 2012.
