Two more direct reduction plants in the MENA region

After the successful startup of the 1,6 Mt/a Energiron DRI plant at Emirates Steel Industries (ESI) Minimill #1 in Abu Dhabi - that it is already producing 1.8 Mt/a well exceeding its nominal capacity - two more new DRI plants are being supplied by Danieli under the Energiron technology worldwide license agreement.

With a site establishment in October 2008, the advanced erection stage of the DRI plant at ESI minimill # 2 will lead to production startup of both DRI and meltshop within 2010.

The other DRI plant, which has a design capacity of 1,9 Mt/a cold discharge DRI, will be supplied to the Ezz Group and installed in Ain Soukhna, Egypt. The shaft furnace will be the world’s largest in terms of productivity from a single production unit. The furnace will feed the existing flat product minimill which is being expanded into a flat and long product minimill complex.

An additional feature of the plant is the inclusion of a CO 2 removal unit for the selection removal of CO2 from the process gas recycle stream. Startup of the plant is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2011.

The flat product minimill which is in operation since 2002 the new caster and mill for long product as well as the meltshop upgrade, are from Danieli.
