New steel mill for Qatar Steel
Qatar Steel Company ordered melting furnaces, a continuous billet caster and a dedusting plant for a new steel mill in Mesaieed, Qatar.
The plant systems were originally intended to replace old equipment in the existing steel mill. Because of growing demand for steel in the Gulf region, the new equipment will now be installed in a newly constructed steel mill and is being designed for higher production capacity.
The new steel mill in Mesaieed Industrial City is being equipped with a 110-t electric-arc furnace, a 110-t ladle furnace, a six-strand continuous billet caster and auxiliary plant systems, including a new dedusting plant in order to significantly reduce emissions from the steelmaking plant. The melting furnaces for the original modernization project were designed for a capacity of only 95 t. The new steel mill is characterized by low specific consumption in areas such as electrodes, electrical power and utilities.
Qatar Steel Company is among the leading steelmakers in the Gulf region. Since 1974, the company is operating a steel mill in Mesaieed Industrial City, which is located approximately 50 km south of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The newly constructed mill is intended to meet the increasing demand for structural steels in the Gulf region and contribute to the planned infrastructural expansion in the State of Qatar.
