Study on the influence of process parameters on mechanical properties and pitting corrosion of dissimilar AISI 304 to AISI 4140 continuous drive friction welds
Friction forces, forging forces, burn-off, regression equation, corrosion resistance, dissimilar welds, stainless steels
Most of the difficulties arising in power plants originate from the failures of welded joints between different steel grades, especially of different corrosion resistance. The defects in welds arise due to carbon migration from low-alloy steel to austenitic stainless steel; further, differences in the coefficient of thermal expansion, corrosion, dilution and distortion are worth mentioning. In order to minimize the welding problems and to improve the joint characteristics solid state welding is proposed. This process group covering, e.g., friction welding has proven a reliable and economical method of joining similar and dissimilar materials. The process parameters directly influence the joint properties. ...
