GIFT Students won 2007 Virtual Steelmaking Challenge

Students from POSTECH in South Korea have won the steeluniversity.org Virtual Steelmaking Challenge. The team of Hyunsoo Kim, Sangmin Lee and Daehee Woo beat hundreds of other competitors by posting a result of $26.07 (overall cost/tonne).
Runners-up were Tae Jin Song, Hee Yong Park and Jae Hoon Jang, also from POSTECH. The winning team in the Industry category was Zhang Wen and Zhao Gang, from Ansteel, China, who were in fifth place overall.
The Virtual Steelmaking Challenge is IISI's annual competition for students and steel industry employees. It uses the steelmaking simulations on IISI's steeluniversity.org website.
The 2007 competition challenged entrants to refine and cast a beverage can grade of steel, specially introduced for the event.
440 university and steel industry participants from 26 countries took part, making a total of almost 13,000 attempts over the 24-hour period of the Challenge.
