worldsteel awards the winner of the steeluniversity Challenge
May 15, 2010
The World Steel Association (worldsteel) presented the trophy and prize to the winner of the fifth steeluniversity Challenge in the student category in Beijing.

Luo Zhaozhen, a student from China’s Wuhan University of Science and Technology won the challenge in the student category. The runners-up in this category were Wang Feilong, Yayung He, Hang Zou, and Chen Ting, also from the same university.

After receiving the award from Mr Paolo Rocca, CEO of Techint and Chairman of the World Steel Association Luo Zhaozhen said, “This is a very honourable moment for me. Many university students in China consider the steel industry as a great opportunity for their career and also as a business they grow into for life. On completion of my studies I would like to join a leading steel company and become a member of the global steel community contributing to my country’s sustainable economic development. I would like to thank worldsteel for the opportunity it provides to students with this high level Challenge.”

Commenting on the occasion Paolo Rocca, said, “We are very impressed with the level of skills the participant students demonstrated at the Challenge and pleased to see the nearly 300% jump in the number of attempts this year. This is evidence that steeluniversity.org is an extraordinary tool for training the next generation of steelmakers to develop their knowledge and skill to higher levels. Initiated in 2005, the Challenge is a global competition that attracts a growing number of students and new employees in the steel industry.”

The Challenge was held online on 27 January 2010 over a single 24 hour period. The task was to process an order of steel plate for a yellow goods application (construction and agricultural equipment), using the steeluniversity.org website’s secondary steelmaking and plate rolling simulations. The team successfully producing the order at the lowest cost/tonne within the allotted time frame was declared the winner.

This year’s competition attracted more than 43,000 attempts from 645 teams representing 25 different countries. 453 teams successfully completed the task, using a steel grade specially defined for this event.
