Creation of a classification algorithm for inclusion identification and its applicability to vacuum degassed steel
Inclusion, classification, automatic inclusion detection software, ladle treatment
A classification of inclusions was developed using a commercial automatic inclusion detection software. Three classes were made, i.e. spinel, TP-(CaO-Al2O3), and (CaO-Al2O3) class, corresponding to inclusions consisting of pure spinel (MgO•Al2O3), two-phase calcium aluminates with spinel or MgO core, and pure calcium aluminate. Steel samples were taken before and after degassing at Uddeholm Tooling and the inclusions were classified using the new classification process. The results showed that, after degassing, the spinel phase disappeared along with a reduction in the number of two-phase inclusions (TP-(CaO-Al2O3)). Pure calcium aluminates, however, showed an increasing trend in the majority of heats. This method showed that it could be a great help in reducing the work load of the researchers and in providing an overall picture of the formation, development and removal of inclusions at different steps in the production of steel.
