Effect of bismuth(III)chloride on the dealloying of Cu binary alloys in acid solution: dealuminification and denickelification
Corrosion, inhibition, BiCl3, dealloying, dealuminification, denickelification
The inhibition effect of bismuth(III)chloride (BiCl3) on the corrosion of aluminum bronze (Cu/7Al) and copper-nickel alloys of Cu/10Ni and Cu/30Ni in 0.1 M HCl was investigated using potentiostatic Tafel plots, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).Tafel plot measurements indicated that BiCl3 behaves as cathodic inhibitor in case of Al-bronze, whereas it has a very weak effect on Cu/30Ni. On the other hand, it promotes the dissolution rate of Cu/10Ni in the test solution. Surface analysis examination using SEM and EDX showed that the deposition of Bi-metal oc-curred on the Al-bronze surface which inhibits its dissolution. In case of Cu/30Ni, very minute amount of Bi had deposited ex-hibiting needle shape at definite regions and the surface was subject to some attack. Decreasing the Ni content in Cu/10Ni, the surface is only little attacked and no deposited Bi occurs. These reveales that the deposition of Bi on the alloy surface de-pends on the intermetallic solid solution phase formed and its equilibrium potential.
