Functional wear resistant tool surfaces for hot metal forming processes
Hot sheet metal forming, wear, functional PVD coating, multilayer
Hot metal forming of high-performance steels imposes complex demands on tools due to high contact pressures and temperatures. Next to thermally induced microstructure transformations, such as oxidisation, steady temperature cycling cause a significant decrease in the tool wear resistance and strength, which are associated with a reduction of the tool's service life. In addition, galling of material formed on the tool's surface reduces process accuracy and, furthermore, leads to abrasion of the contact zone.

In this study novel functional coatings have been developed to improve the wear resistance of tools for hot metal forming processes. The focus is on coatings exhibiting high wear and oxidisation resistance at elevated temperatures as well as low tendency towards material galling on the tool's surface. The deposited coatings have been analyzed by means of ball-on-disk, nanoindenter and SEM. Investigations on the coating behaviour under thermo-mechanical exposure have also been carried out.
