Electrochemical machining of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
Electrochemical machining, surface roughness, current density, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
Electrochemical polishing with 10 % sodium chlorate electrolyte was used to investigate chemical polishing for three different metal alloys used widely in mechanical industries, to obtain high surface finish. The relationships between time and surface roughness as well as between current density and surface roughness were studied for hot-work tool steel, cold-work tool steel and dure aluminum. It is shown that it was possible to obtain surface roughness values of 2.8 mm and 2.31 mm for both tool steels and dure aluminum, respectively, after a 120-min treatment.
Three more experiments were also carried out to study the relationship between current density and surface roughness obtained after 120-min polishing for each material.
With a current density of 0.15 A/cm², it was possible to get surface roughness values of 2.5 mm for hot work tool steel and 2.8 mm for cold-work tool steel, resp., whereas for dure aluminum, surface roughness of 2.3 mm was achieved with a current density of 0.1 A/cm².
