Dofasco, Canada, to idle EAF for three months
Jan 15, 2009
ArcelorMittal Dofasco will temporarily idle its electric arc furnace for three months in an attempt to reduce costs. The move will not result in any further production cuts at the steelmaker, which plans to shift the steelmaking to another furnace at the plant, spokesperson Larry Meyer told STEEL GRIPS.
"We're not producing any less steel, we're just shifting where it's made," Meyer said. "Nothing's changing in terms of production levels." The company will move the production to its integrated operations, using existing inventories of raw materials such as iron ore.
The move allows the firm to avoid purchasing the scrap metal that is melted down in its electric arc furnace. Though prices for scrap have plummeted in recent months, "if we don't need to buy it, we won't," Meyer said.
The firm will also process more steel slabs made at other operations, including ArcelorMittal's other plant in Contrecoeur, Que. ArcelorMittal Dofasco has already slashed production by 40 per cent after demand for steel collapsed late last year.
