Jul 7, 2009
"I am proud of this recognition", Giovanni Arvedi admits.
Giovanni Arvedi, President of the Arvedi group, was awarded the Bessemer Gold Medal 2009.

The certificate documents: "For outstanding services to the steel industry. Awarded to Giovanni Arvedi for his audacious approach to hot strip manufacture with his construction of a compact, in-line casting and rolling process for hot strip at the first ISP plant in Cremona, Italy. He is greatly responsible for the development of this plant in his hometown, and has an open approach to innovation. He has sought to share knowledge of thin slab casting and rolling across Europe. Giovanni is an inspirational leader and displays exceptional personal commitment."

Giovanni Arvedi has always considered research and innovation of great importance, hence they played an essential role in the development of the Arvedi group’s activities. More than 20 patents protect the industrial property rights of Arvedi AST - Arvedi Steel Technology - in the most important industrialised countries. Since 1992, Arvedi ISP (in-line strip production) Cremona plant, has produced over 20 million t of steel. Further developed to endless strip production, Arvedi ESP plant is designed for an annual production of over 3 million t of hot rolled steel in a single casting line.

"I am proud of this recognition", Giovanni Arvedi admits STEEL GRIPS, "because it rewards a process of entrepreneurial development based on research and innovation, the only way possible to face the challenges that the future offers us. It is an award I want to share with my closest staff and with all the employees of my group who have had, and still have every day, a fundamental role."

The technological inventions applied at the Cremona works will be illustrated within the scope of a conference to be held at the end of October in London.

The Bessemer Gold Medal Award, sponsored by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining acknowledges the most important inventors in the world steel industry.

Instituted in 1874 by Sir Henry Bessemer, the medal has honoured milestones in the development of steel manufacturing processes. Since then, more than 135 trend-setting entrepreneurs have been presented with this prize.

Giovanni Arvedi, entitled Cavaliere del Lavoro, is the president of Finarvedi S.p.A, the holding company of Arvedi group. The Arvedi group is particularly distinguished for its development of technological innovation and research aimed at obtaining high quality products. In 2008, the group produced and processed 2 million t of steel at five production sites.
