German researchers received Niobium Award for a new high strength alloy concept for helically welded steel pipes
Charles Hatchett Award 2010; novel alloy for helically welded large diameter pipes; API X80
A group of German scientists has won the Charles Hatchett Award 2010 for research into the use of a novel alloy for large diameter steel pipes. The novel concept combines increased strength and low-temperature toughness compared to standard line pipe grades. It has opened the gate to the production of helically welded large diameter pipes up to wall thicknesses of 25.4 mm for strength levels of API X80.
The annual prize is awarded to the best paper on science and technology of niobium and its alloys. This year`s winners are collaborators of the Salzgitter AG and the prize was donated by CBMM (Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração) from Brazil at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in London in July 2010.
